New York state hit another record for new daily COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, with 28,942, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday.

It’s the fifth day in the last six where a pandemic-high number of cases was recorded and the sixth day in a row where the state reported more than 20,000 cases.

“This virus is going vertical,” Hochul said.

Hochul added that hospitalizations, while higher than they were in the last few months, are still only two-thirds of what they were at this point last year.

The governor reiterated that the omicron variant is quickly spreading, though repeated what she has said in recent days that “this is not March 2020.”

She said her office is also examining the omicron variant’s effect on schools.

“We have to keep schools open. This is a challenge,” Hochul said. “We want to make sure after holiday break that kids can safely come back to school.”

The governor added that two new COVID-19 testing sites are coming to MTA stations beginning Dec. 27. One will be at Times Square and 42nd Street, and the other at Grand Central Station. Other locations will be announced next week.
