A state lawmaker on Wednesday urged Gov. Andrew Cuomo to require hospitals to provide medical updates to family members of patients on a regular basis as visits are barred due to the pandemic.

Democratic Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein in a statement called on Cuomo to issue an executive order amid the no-visitor policy implementation.

The policy is meant to limit the spread of COVID-19 within a hospital, but that also has the effect of isolating patients.

Eichenstein said patient representatives need a form of access and ability to communicate updates every 24 hours with families.

Eichenstein said he was spurred by calls from constituents.

“It is heart-breaking to get call after call from crying family members who are unaware of the medical status of their loved ones in the hospital,” Eichenstein said. “Governor Cuomo needs to issue an executive order directing hospitals to ensure a minimal level of communication between hospitals and families.”
