The USNS Comfort will be coming to the New York City harbor amid an expected increase in need for hospital beds due to coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday said.

The ship will provide an additional 1,000 beds. But New York will need much more than its current capacity and what the ship can offer.

New York officials on Tuesday projected the state needing as many as 37,000 intensive care unit beds and 110,000 hospital beds.

Cuomo is urging companies to produce more ventilators that will be needed for those who come to the hospital with serious breathing problems.

At the same time, Cuomo later on Wednesday plans to speak with the Army Corps of Engineers about expanding hospital capacity. The state is considering converting facilities like old nursing homes in order to expand capacity.
