Schools in which students or staff test positive for the coronavirus will be closed for at least 24 hours, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.

The move would allow schools to disinfect a building and have the state perform a review to determine whether and when the school should re-open.

The state Department of Health and the Education Department will issue a joint guidance later Monday, Cuomo said.

New York's total positive coronavirus case number is now up to 142 people, most of which remain concentrated in Westchester County. State officials last week announced a New Rochelle man had tested positive, which has led to community spread.

Health Commissioner Howard Zucker at the same news conference said the state was considering closing New Rochelle schools for a period of weeks based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
