The State Police is investigating people who have stolen medical equipment from hospitals like face masks amid concerns over the spread of coronavirus in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday said.

"It's not just people taking a couple -- two or three," Cuomo said at a news conference. "I mean actual thefts of those products."

Cuomo also wants an investigation of people who are re-selling the products as well as those taking advantage of coronavirus fears and selling products at higher prices.

He said he would request Attorney General Letitia James to look into the issue.

"There's also a price gouging component and I'm going to ask the attorney general to do a price gouging investigation," Cuomo said. "It's one of the consequences of the anxiety."

Sen. Brad Hoylman previously introduced legislation that would bar people from price gouging during the spread of the virus.

The governor's office on Friday also announced 4,000 people are in self-quarantine. Of those, 2,700 people are in New York City.

There are now more than 30 confirmed cases in New York.
