Rochester Assemblyman David Gantt on Friday announced he would not seek another term for a seat he has held since 1983.

Gantt at a news conference cited his health and the advice of doctors to not continue in the chamber.

Gantt isn't just another rank-and-file lawmaker: He's a longtime political power broker in the city of Rochester and has wielded influence both in his home district and in Albany.

Gantt, however, has been ailing in recent years and his appearances on session days at the Capitol became rarer and rarer.

"I've had a good time," Gantt said. "And I'm gonna miss it."
