LOS ANGELES — Andrea Velez, a U.S. citizen who was born and raised in Los Angeles, says she never expected to end up in federal custody Tuesday morning, after she was dropped off at her workplace near Main and 9th streets in Downtown LA.
In a widely shared social media video, ICE agents are seen picking up the 32-year-old, handcuffing her and placing her into an unmarked SUV.
Homeland security officials say it wasn’t a case of mistaken identity. They say what isn’t captured on camera are the moments leading up to Velez’s arrest, in which they accuse Velez of physically assaulting an ICE agent and impeding the arrest of a nearby vendor.
Velez’s lawyers say she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and was racially profiled by both LAPD and federal agents.
