A Western New York leader was among those present at Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night when an American Airlines jet collided with an Army helicopter. Investigators say there were 60 passengers and four crew onboard the jet and three soldiers onboard the helicopter.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz was in Washington for the National Association of Counties Disaster Reform Task Force and was preparing to travel back to Western New York when the crash happened. On social media, the county executive shared his condolences with families who have lost their loved ones.

Officials in charge of search and rescue operations say they do not believe there are any survivors.

American Airlines Flight 5342 was inbound to Reagan National at an altitude of about 400 feet and a speed of about 140 miles per hour when it suffered a rapid loss of altitude over the Potomac River, according to data from its radio transponder. The military helicopter was on a training flight while on approach to an airport runway when the two aircraft collided.

At this time, investigators say they do not know why the helicopter flew into the path of the airliner. All takeoffs and landings from the airport were halted as dive teams scoured the site and helicopters from law enforcement agencies across the region flew over the scene in a methodical search for bodies.
