New York state Attorney General Letitia James is formally investigating how the Oswego County Sheriff's Office has been potentially working with federal agencies on immigration enforcement.
Spectrum News 1 has obtained a letter sent from the AG's office to Oswego County Sheriff Don Hilton.
The letter demands records starting in November 2024.
The attorney general wants documents related to agreements between the sheriff's office and federal agencies like U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security that have to do with enforcement of immigration law, ICE detainer requests and the circumstances surrounding the detention process for individuals who allegedly violated immigration law.
More specifically, the investigation is looking for information like reports and body cam footage on stops made by sheriff's office members that were assisted by federal agencies.
"The Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office reviews matters concerning potential violations of New Yorkers' civil rights," the attorney general's office said in a statement.
Hilton said in a statement that the Oswego County Sheriff's Office has continued the agency's longstanding practice of cooperating with federal agencies on public safety matters.
"The Oswego County Sheriff's Office remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the continued service and protection of the residents of Oswego County," sheriff's office said in a statement.
