More than 75,000 people took part in the first weekend of early voting for this year's primary elections in New York state, according to state Board of Elections numbers released Monday.
As of Monday, 75,302 state residents voted early on Saturday and Sunday, with 36,090 on day one and 39,212 on day two.
The vast majority of those — more than 66,000 — came from New York City voters. About 8,900 came from voters in the other parts of the state. New York City features what may be the state's highest profile race — the Democratic primary for mayor.
In upstate's more populous counties, 3,369 have voted early in Erie County, 790 voted early in Monroe County, 780 voted early in Albany County and 384 voted early in Onondaga County.
The closely watched races across upstate are the primary races for mayor in Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester.
Eligible voters in New York can participate in early voting through Sunday, June 22. Election Day is Tuesday, June 24.
Early voting first came into practice in New York in 2019.
