Early voting starts Saturday, and that’s also the deadline to register to vote in your local primary election.
Monroe County highlighted its new Express Vote XL voting machines on Wednesday. These were used for the first time in village and school district elections earlier this year.
Funding from the county’s capital improvement project helped purchase the machines and officials say they are expected to save taxpayers around $250,000 a year in paper.
“There was a budgeting process over the last couple of years that prepared us for this moment," said Democratic Monroe County Board of Elections Commissioner Jackie Ortiz. "So, over the last several years, we have accumulated approximately $12 million, which is what we've spent on acquiring, over 1,000 of these voting machines.”
There are seven early voting locations across the county. Those run until June 22, while Primary Election Day is on June 24.
The big race on the ballot is the Democratic primary for Rochester mayor. Incumbent Malik Evans is facing a challenge from Rochester City Council member Mary Lupien and IT executive Shashi Sinha.
