New York Gov. Kathy Hochul will face questions Thursday from House lawmakers on Capitol Hill regarding so-called sanctuary policies in the state.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are also expected to testify before the Republican-run House Oversight Committee. All three governors are Democrats.

Some cities and jurisdictions limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, arguing it prevents immigrants without legal status from feeling hesitant about reporting crimes to police or failing to seek health care. Earlier this year, New York City Mayor Eric Adams testified before the same committee on the subject. He sat alongside other big city Democratic mayors, including the leaders of Chicago and Boston.

In a statement, committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said, “The Trump administration is taking decisive action to deport criminal illegal aliens from our nation but reckless sanctuary states like Illinois, Minnesota, and New York are actively seeking to obstruct federal immigration enforcement."

New York Republican Rep. Nick Langworthy, who represents the 23rd Congressional District in the western part of the state, is among the lawmakers on the committee.

In a post on social media, Langworthy wrote, "As the only New York Republican sitting on @GOPoversight, I will hold Kathy Hochul accountable for the horrific crimes she has allowed to happen on her watch."

The testimony comes as advocates are pressuring the state Legislature to pass in the waning days of the session a bill known as New York For All, which aims to limit collaboration between state and local law enforcement and immigration authorities.
