Spectrum News 1 is getting our very first look at the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee’s effort to cut Medicaid by $880 billion between 2025 and 2034.

Democrats on the committee estimate that the legislation would reduce the number of people with health insurance in the U.S. by at least 8.6 million people.

Elisabeth Benjamin, vice president of health initiatives at the Community Service Society, estimates that additional cuts to the Affordable Care Act will add about 5 million more people to that number.

“This is a bullseye on the state of New York,” she told Capital Tonight.

The only New York Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Nick Langworthy, who represents New York's 23rd Congressional District, released a statement supporting the language, saying in part, “Let’s be clear: if we do nothing, the system goes broke. Medicaid and other essential programs will collapse under the weight of wasteful spending, fraud, and abuse. For too long, these programs have operated with little accountability — broken systems with no safeguards for taxpayers. That’s unacceptable. We have a duty to protect both the people who depend on these services and the taxpayers who fund them."
