Mayoral candidate and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo sharpened his attacks Sunday, not on his fellow Democrats in the race, but on President Donald Trump.

During visits to two churches in Brooklyn and in an exclusive interview with NY1, Cuomo criticized Trump’s proposed federal budget cuts, warning they could significantly impact New York City.

“This is going to compound every problem we have in New York,” Cuomo said. “We have an affordable housing problem, we have a homeless problem, and you look at the cuts that he has made, it goes directly to the needs of New York City.”

Cuomo, considered a leading candidate in the mayoral race, greeted churchgoers in Brownsville while outlining his concerns.

He pointed to the president’s plan to cut $163 billion across the federal government, with some of the deepest reductions targeting the Department of Health and Human Services. Cuomo warned the cuts could affect everything from Head Start programs to health care for 9/11 first responders.

“We have to fight him on every battle on every one of these programs,” Cuomo said. “We have to try and stop him in the U.S. Congress, which I believe we have a good chance of doing. We have to build a political coalition nationwide.”

Cuomo also spent part of Saturday at a synagogue in Brooklyn and said he intends to visit a mosque as well on his campaign trail.

“We're visiting communities all across the city of New York,” Cuomo said. “I think that it’s a very important time that New Yorkers come together.”

Cuomo also responded to Mayor Eric Adams' recently announced budget proposal, which Adams has called “the best budget ever.” Cuomo said the city’s budget process cannot be finalized until there is more clarity on the potential federal cuts.
