White House border czar Tom Homan will be in Rochester on Tuesday.

Homan said during a White House briefing Monday morning that he'll be in town to visit the Rochester Police Locust Club. His visit follows his public criticism of Rochester City Hall and its sanctuary city policy following a traffic stop last month by the U.S. Border Patrol. RPD Chief David Smith says RPD officers removed and handcuffed some of the people in the vehicle, which city leaders say is against the city's sanctuary policy.

The U.S. Department of Justice has also sued for an injunction against the city's long-standing policy.

Court paperwork shows the suit stems from an incident in March in which Rochester police officers assisted federal agents in detaining three people. One of them was charged with illegal entry into the U.S.

Homan is in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)'s Enforcement and Removal Operations and the Department of Homeland Security. He talked about why he’s coming to Rochester during a White House briefing earlier on Monday.

“I don't think any elected mayor, or any elected governor, should want public safety threats [or] those that are illegal in the United States, public safety threats, walking through the community," Homan said.

The RPD officers involved in the stop were sidelined until they were retrained on those policies. Some city leaders say that’s not enough and have even called for them to be fired.

“They did the right thing," Homan said. "Law enforcement responding to emergency assistance from law enforcement. So, I'm going up there to support the men and women in law enforcement, the men and women who carry that badge and gun every day, that work in the streets at 2 a.m. while we're all sleeping. I'm going to give my support. And they just announced a lawsuit. And that’s just one of many. Sanctuary cities are going to be sued on this administration for flouting immigration law. I mean, the law is clear, and they're violating it. And this administration is going to take action. I'm going to street my support of the men and women of law enforcement. I started as a cop in the community. I'm showing support for them because the community wants their police officers to be officers too. The communities don't want public safety threats walking around their communities either. And that's what it's all about. And that's what I'm going.”

Rochester is now one of many sanctuary cities across the country and the state being sued by the Department of Justice for that policy.

The DOJ says the City of Rochester’s Sanctuary City laws and policies are illegal – stating they interfere with and discriminate against the federal government’s enforcement of federal immigration law and intentionally obstruct the federal government’s enforcement of that law.

Mayor Malik Evans said last week he will defend and protect the city’s residents and their interests and will make sure the city defends any lawsuit.
