U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik has returned to House GOP leadership in the new role of chairwoman of House Republican Leadership and was reappointed to her committees after President Donald Trump recently withdrew her nomination as ambassador to the United Nations.
According to a press release Wednesday, the leadership chair role is a senior leadership appointed position focused on strategy and communications. It has been used by multiple previous Republican leadership teams and comes with budget, staff, and an expansive strategy, legislative, and communications portfolio.
Stefanik, who represents New York's 21st Congressional District, most recently had served as House GOP Conference chair — the third-highest ranking Republican in the House — a role she’d had since 2021. But the caucus filled that role with Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain after Trump nominated Stefanik as U.N. ambassador shortly after his election in November.
Trump withdrew her nomination in late March, citing the concern over plundering another Republican from the House of Representatives when the party’s majority in the chamber is extremely thin and during a crucial time for Trump to enact his agenda. Last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters he was looking for a way to “figure out some creative role for Elise to play” in leadership.
“I am honored to be appointed Chairwoman of House Republican Leadership to lead House Republicans in implementing President Donald Trump's mandate from the American people for an America First agenda that includes securing our borders, strengthening our national security, growing our economy, and combating the scourge of antisemitism across our country,” Stefanik said in a statement. “I’m proud to continue my work as a senior Member of the House Intelligence Committee, House Armed Services Committee, and the Education and the Workforce Committee to secure results for my constituents in New York's 21st Congressional District and the American people. I look forward to the work ahead in enacting President Trump’s historic agenda.”
