Members of the Seneca Falls community rallied again outside the Seneca Falls Town Board meeting Tuesday night.
They are against the board's decision to approve the operating permit for Seneca Meadows Landfill, saying it holds major consequences for the air, water and overall health of the Finger Lakes region and beyond.
The group is calling for the governor and the state Department of Environmental Conservation to deny the permit.
“Seneca Falls residents of all stripes, from parents and teachers to business owners, showed up in force tonight to protest the town board’s capitulation to Waste Connections and demand they correct their error,” said Yvonne Taylor, co-founder and vice president of the nonprofit the Seneca Lake Guardian. “This vote mistakenly sends a message to the DEC that the town supports the landfill’s expansion, when in fact, the vast majority do not. The town board must rethink its position and represent the will of its constituents.”
Seneca Falls Town Clerk Melissa Brown deemed the board's vote last month invalid, saying the board failed to introduce or second resolutions relating to the permit.
However, Town Supervisor Frank Schmitter says he consulted the town's attorney and says there is no such requirement and that the board's vote would stand regardless.
