BUFFALO, N.Y. — A group of people in Buffalo held a demonstration to protest tariffs on Canada which were announced by the Trump administration in February.
The 25% tariff on goods coming into the U.S. from Canada took effect on Wednesday after it was delayed following talks with Canada's leader. In response, Canada has also announced tariffs on U.S. imports.
Roughly 100 people gathered at the pedestrian bridge near the U.S.-Canada border crossing at the Peace Bridge with Canadian flags and signs condemning the tariffs and showing love for Canada.
“My own father was a dual citizen of Canada and the United States and fought in our Army here in World War II," said Carol Goldstein. "This is the most important relationship that we have as a country. The longest undefended border in the world. And we need to keep it that way.”
From the pedestrian bridge, protesters could see Canadians gathered on the other side of the shoreline.
“We know who they are and we have relationships with them," said Cindi Denick. "I just want to show them that there are Americans out here who love them and want to maintain a peaceful relationship, a prosperous relationship between the two. I just hope to bring awareness that America doesn't feel like we should be enemies with Canada. There are a lot of us here who really want to maintain relations, maintain trade relations, not have crazy tariffs that are going to drive the prices up for everybody. We don’t need a trade war.”
President Donald Trump called Wednesday "Liberation Day" for the U.S., announcing tariffs on nations across the world.
