Former U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito has been nominated by President Donald Trump’s administration to serve as the next inspector general for the U.S. Department of Labor, months after he narrowly lost his reelection bid in November, the White House said Monday evening.

The role conducts audits to review the effectiveness, efficiency, economy, and integrity of all Department of Labor programs and operations, including those performed by its contractors and grantees, according to the department's website. It also conducts criminal, civil, and administrative investigations into alleged violations of federal laws relating to DOL programs, operations, and personnel.

D'Esposito, a Long Island Republican, was initially lobbying shortly after Trump's reelection to serve as the next Drug Enforcement Agency administrator after Trump’s first pick to run the DEA, Hillsborough County, Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister, withdrew his name from consideration.

D’Esposito was elected to New York's 4th Congressional District in 2022. He lost his bid for a second term to Democrat Laura Gillen in a rematch contest last fall.

D’Esposito is the latest former member of New York's Republican congressional delegation to be nominated by the Trump White House. Former Rep. Lee Zeldin is now serving as EPA administrator. Former Rep. Marc Molinaro is in the confirmation process to be Federal Transit administrator under the U.S. Department of Transportation. Rep. Elise Stefanik was nominated to be the next UN ambassador but Trump withdrew that pick last week.

The position of DOL inspector general is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
