First, New York state's population is aging, which means there are more people looking for beds in nursing homes, while nursing homes across the state are closing due to staffing shortages. Many people use Medicaid to pay for nursing homes.

The other issue is possible deep cuts to Medicaid coming from Washington.

Earlier this week, the House Republican majority passed a budget resolution instructing the U.S. Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicaid and Medicare, to cut at least $880 billion from the programs over 10 years.

Experts agree there is not a viable path to do that without cutting care for the poor.

Capital Tonight spoke with Bea Grause, president of the Healthcare Association of New York, about what these issues may mean for the Empire State.
