New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday nominated Amanda Lefton to be the next state commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

According  to the governor’s office, Lefton has previously served as director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) within the U.S. Department of the Interior, which developed and implemented a federal offshore wind program.

She has also been the first assistant secretary for energy and environment for New York and deputy policy director and climate mitigation lead for the Nature Conservancy in New York.

“I am committed to delivering meaningful results to enhance the health and safety of communities all across the State and to protecting our environment and natural resources for future generations," Lefton said in a statement.

Lefton must be confirmed by the state Senate. She would replace Basil Seggos, who stepped down as DEC commissioner in March 2024. Sean Mahar, executive deputy commissioner under Seggos, is currently the acting commissioner.

Hochul also on Monday nominated acting Commissioner of the Division of Human Rights Denise Miranda to serve the position in her full capacity and Willow Baer as commissioner of the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities.
