Mayor Eric Adams had harsh words for a reporter Tuesday when asked why he had skipped his usual press forums for two consecutive weeks.
“Because y’all are liars,” Adams said in response to City Hall reporter Katie Honan, who confronted him during his visit to a wounded police officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.
Honan, who covers New York City politics for TheCity.nyc, later said she was not surprised by the mayor’s rhetoric, given the mounting issues facing his administration.
“Things have escalated for Mayor Adams very quickly, and things are really serious right now,” Honan said Wednesday on “Mornings On 1.” “As my colleague Harry always says, ‘Cornered rats bite back.’ So I don't blame him for responding to us that way.”
She went on to call Adams’ remarks hypocritical, accusing him of misrepresenting details about the Justice Department’s recent decision to drop corruption charges against him.
“It was ironic being called a liar—all of us—when last week, he stood at a podium in the Blue Room and in his speech to New Yorkers, when the DOJ memo was released, he essentially lied to them,” she said. “He did not tell them the circumstances and the terms in which this memo was released. Then it was released, [the DOJ] asked the charges be released without prejudice, which means they can and likely will bring the charges back once he is no longer of use to President Donald Trump.”
Honan said Adams’ criticism of the press is not new but has intensified as scrutiny on his administration grows.
“Mayor Adams has always had a contentious relationship with this press covering him,” she said. “I think he [thinks] all the press should just say, ‘This guy's great,’ and ‘Wow, he's wonderful. I can't believe it,’ which is what he's joked that we should call him.”
She also pointed to what she sees as contradictions in Adams’ approach to the media.
“He hasn't had time to meet with the reporters covering him, but he's been on ‘Fox and Friends.’ He did ‘Dr. Phil.’ He did Tucker Carlson,” she said. “And it is also ironic, he also tends to call the predominantly white press corps…He likes to call us racist, but then go on shows with hosts that have been racist in the past.”
