Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is vowing to push back against President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico, saying the plan is only going to drive up costs for everyday Americans.

“I think what President Trump is doing is harmful. It's creating chaos. It doesn't make sense. It's not going to have the impact that he's hoping it has. It's just going to raise costs for everyday Americans,” Gillibrand said Monday on “Mornings On 1.”

Trump admitted over the weekend that the tariffs—set to take effect Tuesday—could cause some economic pain. He declared an economic emergency and imposed duties of 10% on all imports from China and 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada, arguing they’re necessary to address fentanyl and illegal immigration at U.S. borders.

But Gillibrand, a Democrat, said the real impact will hit consumers, making everything from food to housing more expensive.

“When you put a large tariff on countries that you buy things from, the cost of the things you buy is going to go up,” she said. “Mexico—we buy tequila, beer, avocados, tomatoes. Sounds like Super Bowl is going to get much more expensive. From Canada, we buy things like lumber. So if we want to build more affordable housing and get rent prices down, that's going to be very difficult.”

The senator also pointed to the economic ties between upstate New York and Canada, noting tariffs will disrupt multiple industries in the state.

“They have inputs from Canada to build a product to sell, and if you can't easily or affordably get those inputs, it's going to disrupt your whole manufacturing supply chain,” she said. “That will mean the cost of things like cars and electronics goes up.”

Gillibrand acknowledged that with Democrats as the minority party of both chambers of Congress, it will be difficult blocking Trump’s policies, but she vowed they will remain the “party in opposition.”
