A week after Election Day, as President-elect Donald Trump announces cabinet nominees and the Senate Republicans gear up for a leadership race, control of the U.S. House of Representatives remains unknown.

The trendlines indicate, like two years ago, Republicans will maintain a narrow majority in Capitol Hill’s lower chamber, but the Associated Press has yet to declare the party has won the necessary seats to clinch control. As of Tuesday afternoon, AP has declared Republicans have won 214 seats while Democrats have won 205, with 218 needed to win a majority. There are 16 uncalled races, mostly on the West Coast, where California in particular has a number of purple districts that will be decided by close margins.

“We’re counting on California. The results aren’t in yet for California,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters Tuesday in Albany of the Democrats’ very slim chance of taking back control that they lost in 2022.

Despite the odds, Hochul took a victory lap for the Democrats who flipped several seats in New York this cycle, unseating three freshman Republicans in the 22nd, 19th and 4th districts. Democrats also maintained their incumbents in the competitive 18th and 3rd districts.

“I’m proud of what we did here in New York. I’m very proud of what we did here. Five out of seven wins in our swing districts, defying the national odds,” Hochul said. “We worked hard. We had good candidates. We run on the issues. That’s how you win. We’ll continue to do that.”

Hochul faced criticism from some Democratic Party leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for the party’s poor showing in the 2022 elections in which Republicans flipped several of those House seats, helping them grip their majority two years ago. She made flipping those House seats back a priority this year, dispatching millions of state party dollars and volunteers to assist vulnerable candidates.

As the state’s highest elected Democrat, the outcomes this year were crucial to her arguments and the party’s apparatus as she prepares to run for another run in 2026.
