Upset following comments made during former President Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, local, state and federal elected officials gathered together in East Harlem Monday afternoon.
“The comments made yesterday were racist, vile and reprehensible,” Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, said at the gathering.

Velázquez reacted to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who was part of the opening act for Trump’s rally.
“There’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now,” Hinchcliffe said at the rally Sunday. “I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
“This was Donald Trump’s rally. He invited every speaker,” Rep. Dan Goldman, who represents parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, said.
On “Fox & Friends,” Trump 2024 National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted “it was a comedian who made a joke in poor taste.”
“Obviously, that joke does not reflect the views of President Trump and our campaign,” she added.
“It was a slap in the face,” Bronx Assemblymember Karines Reyes told NY1.
Reyes, who is also a nurse, traveled to Puerto Rico after category four Hurricane Maria.
“All Donald Trump did was show up to the island and throw paper towels at our people as if that was enough,” she said.
As Trump campaigned at Madison Square Garden Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced her plan to boost the economy of Puerto Rico.
When asked about Hinchcliffe’s comments, Harris told reporters, “I’m very proud to have the support of folks like Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez and others who were supporting me before that nonsense last night at Madison Square Garden.”
