Spectrum News will host the only debate between the candidates for New York's U.S. Senate race on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Republican challenger Mike Sapraicone will face off at 7 p.m. at the University at Albany for one of the seats in the nation's upper chamber on Capitol Hill.

After a brief stint in the House of Representatives, Gillibrand has represented New York in the U.S. Senate since 2009 when she was appointed by then-Gov. David Paterson to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton when she became secretary of state. She is running for a third full six-year term.

Sapraicone was a New York City police detective for 20 years. When he retired from the force, he transitioned into private security, starting a 600-employee company that provides armed security services to the nation’s largest corporations. A resident of Long Island, Sapraicone also mounted a brief campaign for former Rep. George Santos’ seat in the state's 3rd Congressional District after he was expelled from Congress last year.

The debate will be moderated by Spectrum News political anchors Susan Arbetter and Errol Louis. Spectrum News will make the debate available to the general public through the Spectrum News app or by going to Spectrumlocalnews.com/live.

The debate will be available on Spectrum News NY1 in New York City, in upstate New York on Spectrum News 1 on channel 1, and via the Spectrum News app on mobile, Xumo Steam Box, Roku and Apple TV streaming devices.

Attendance other than members of the media are reserved for University at Albany students, faculty and staff.
