In recent weeks, both former President Donald Trump and his vice presidential running mate, JD Vance, have been amplifying an internet conspiracy theory about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio.
The claim has been debunked with Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine calling the idea "garbage."
The conspiracy theory has led to multiple threats of violence against the Haitian community and schools in the area. New York state Assemblymember Michaelle Solages, a Haitian-American who chairs the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, joined Capital Tonight on Monday to discuss the rhetoric and its impact on the community.
