New York is one of several states in the nation where abortion is legal and easily accessible, but that doesn’t mean Planned Parenthood is insulated from market pressures.

On Wednesday, the organization announced they were proposing that two of its clinics in the Mohawk Valley and one in Orange County should close.

The New York State Department of Health needs to approve those closures.

There are five umbrella Planned Parenthood organizations across the state; the closures fall under Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, which cited “compounding financial and political challenges.”

The clinics to be closed are in the communities of Amsterdam, Cobleskill and Orange County. No staff will be let go, nor will services be affected, according to the organization.

Wendy Stark, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, told Capital Tonight that while the state provided $25 million in abortion access grants to a variety of providers across the state in the latest state budget, as well as $10 million for security, there is a persistent, growing gap between reimbursement and the cost of care.

She spoke with Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter.
