Incumbent Demond Meeks has defeated challenger Willie Lightfoot in the 137th Assembly District Democratic primary race, The Associated Press projects.

Meeks, a former labor organizer, did not have party's backing in this election, or in 2020, when he was first elected.

Lightfoot is a retired firefighter, U.S. Air Force veteran, former county legislator and current city council member. Lightfoot received the Democratic party nomination in the race.

The two have voiced different philosophies when it comes to addressing crime and violence. Meeks supports clean slate legislation. Lightfoot wants bail reform.

The 137th District includes parts of Rochester and Gates.
