The address at Unite Here’s constitutional convention in New York was an official vice presidential stop, but it strongly resembled a campaign speech.

Unite Here represents 300,000 people across the United States and Canada who work in hotels, gaming and food service as well as manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation, and airport industries.

“The bottom line is that in all we do, President [Joe] Biden and I are guided by the belief that we work for you, and we will fight with you, alongside you and for you,” Harris said. “On the other hand, Donald Trump has made it clear time and time again he only cares about himself.”

Harris argued that Trump gave tax cuts to billionaires while Biden gave them to families with children through the child tax credit. The vice president also called out Trump for saying in an interview he planned to be a dictator only on “day one” and for claiming responsibility for the Supreme Court ruling overturning the nationwide right to abortion, among other grievances.

“They're working from a playbook to attack freedoms, to spread hate, to divide our country and to make people feel alone, to make people feel small,” Harris said. “But in the face of these attacks, we here know the power of the collective and unite here. I believe, when you know what to stand for, you know what to fight for.”

Harris called the Biden administration “the most pro-union administration in the history of America.” Unite Here made a similar statement when it endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket more than a year ago.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Spectrum News.

Harris credited the union workers for helping to deliver her and Biden a victory over Trump four years ago.

“In 2020, in states like Georgia, Nevada and Arizona, it was you,” she said. “It was the members of this union who energized, who organized and mobilized. It is because of your work and your support that Joe Biden is president of the United States and I am the first woman elected vice president of the United States. I'm really clear about how we got here.”

She called on union members to help fight for the same causes the Biden administration is.

“We need you to continue to organize,” she said. “We need you to continue to mobilize. We need you to continue knocking on that door.”

Harris applauded Union Here for taking on “some of the most powerful corporations in our nation.”

“You won fair pay, better benefits, safer working conditions and protection against discrimination and harassment,” she said. “Through the power of the collective, you have transformed millions of jobs into middle-class jobs, jobs that come with the dignity that all people deserve.”
