A coalition of attorneys general led by New York's Letitia James is calling on Congress to expand access to in vitro fertilization and other reproductive health services.

The group wants lawmakers to pass the Access to Family Building Act.

Advocates say it would guarantee the right to access assisted reproductive technology like IVF nationwide.

James said it has helped thousands of people in diverse situations grow their families. That includes cancer survivors, same-sex couples, people experiencing infertility or those choosing to parent alone.

The group of attorneys general said high costs and lack of insurance coverage, however, prevent people from fully accessing those services.

James said protecting those services is vital, especially after an Alabama state Supreme Court decision classified frozen embryos used during IVF as people.

This week also marks National Infertility Awareness Week.

The World Health Organization estimates that roughly one in six people worldwide are affected by infertility.
