New York state Assemblyman Joe Giglio will not run for reelection in 2024, according to Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay.

The Western New York Republican, currently of the 148th Assembly District, has served in the Legislature’s lower chamber for nearly 20 years.

“I am sorry to hear Assemblyman Joe Giglio’s decision not to run for re-election. Joe has been an effective legislator because he takes his job seriously and has devoted tremendous time and energy serving his constituents,” Barclay said in a statement Tuesday. “It is an honor for me to be his friend and colleague. When his time in Albany comes to a close, he will leave behind an extraordinary legacy, and I know he will be missed by members on both sides of the aisle.”

Giglio was first elected in a special election in 2005 and is chair of the Minority Conference’s Committee on Standing Committees. He is also a ranking member of the Ethics and Guidance Committee and Correction Committee, and is a member of the Codes and Rules Committee.

Prior to his work in the Legislature, Giglio served as state deputy inspector general, special assistant to former state Attorney General Dennis Vacco and in the sheriff’s departments of Cattaraugus and Erie counties.

Giglio currently lives in Gowanda, in Cattaraugus County.

Republican Joe Sempolinski, who briefly served in Congress in 2022 after winning a special election to fill the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Tom Reed's term, is running for Giglio's Assembly seat.
