An Oneida County farmer is running as a Democrat in the race for New York's 22nd Congressional District.

Jacob Addington grew up in Sauquoit and is a Marine Corps veteran. He is currently a green bean and dairy farmer.

He says he has been unaffiliated with any party for most of his life but in this case is joining the Democratic field for the Central New York House seat.

“When I look at our society today, I see many inefficiencies and injustices that are inexcusable given modern technology and knowledge,” he says on his campaign website. “Much of America’s working class is struggling to afford necessities like food, shelter, transportation, and healthcare. Conflicts abroad are inching towards world war. Computer technology like social media and AI are upending the way we communicate and do our jobs, and climate change is threatening to disrupt our entire way of life.”

Addington says his priority is nationwide election reforms like open primaries, ranked choice voting, and the end of gerrymandering.

He joins state Sen. John Mannion, DeWitt Town Councilor Sarah Klee Hood and Utica associate professor Clemmie Harris in seeking the Democratic nomination to take on freshman Republican Rep. Brandon Williams. A Democratic primary race would take place on June 25.

The 22nd District includes all of Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties, as well as a small sliver of Oswego County.
