Four Republicans in New York’s congressional delegation were once again among the 20-plus GOP members to vote against Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan to be the next speaker of the House of Representatives during a second ballot Wednesday.

Jordan’s second attempt to win the gavel ended with 199 votes, well short of the 217 needed. Twenty-two Republicans voted for someone other than the Ohio congressman.

The same four New York Republicans who voted against Jordan in his first ballot on Tuesday did so again on the second ballot. In addition, their choices for an alternative remained unchanged.

Rep. Nick LaLota, of New York's 1st Congressional District on Long Island, voted for former Rep. Lee Zeldin, who held LaLota's seat for eight years before running unsuccessfully for governor in 2022.

Also voting for Zeldin was Rep. Andrew Garbarino, of the 2nd District, and Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, of the 4th District, both of which are on Long Island.

Rep. Mike Lawler, who represents the lower Hudson Valley in the 17th District, cast a vote for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted from the speakership two weeks ago, leaving the chamber unable to conduct business.

The other seven New York Republicans voted for Jordan but their frustration with the speakership impasse has been made clear.

“No one in their right mind would want this job,” Rep. Marc Molinaro, who represents New York's 19th District, said before heading into Wednesday’s vote.

All Democrats in the House cast their vote for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also of New York.
