Cohen, who served time in prison for concealing hush-money payments made to two women who allegedly had affairs with Trump, confirmed Friday to Spectrum News NY1 that he’s considering running for a House seat in New York. The news website Semafor was the first to report on Cohen’s thinking.

“I am interested and there’s a multitude of folks encouraging me to run,” Cohen told Semafor.

Cohen said he would run as a Democrat. He lives in New York’s 12th congressional district, which covers a large swath of Manhattan and is currently represented by Democrat Jerry Nadler.

Nadler has served in the House since 1992 and last year defeated fellow Democratic incumbent Carolyn Maloney in a primary after redistricting pitted them against each other. As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee since 2019, Nadler played a key role in both of Trump’s impeachments.

While Cohen is best known for his connection to Trump, a Republican, the disbarred lawyer wrote in a post Friday on X, formerly known as Twitter, “I’ve been a Democrat most of my life.”

Cohen, 56, was one of Trump’s most loyal servants and his “fixer,” admitting to working behind the scenes to try to eliminate potentially damaging issues for his boss.

Cohen pleaded guilty in 2019 to nine charges related to paying money to silence adult film actress Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, whom Trump allegedly had affairs with. Cohen said he was carrying out Trump’s orders. The former president has denied the allegations, some of which are at the center of charges Trump is facing in New York.

The relationship between Cohen and Trump began to sour after FBI agents raided Cohen’s office and hotel room in April 2018. Cohen has cooperated with a number of investigations into Trump and his business, and accused Trump of criminal wrongdoing in court, prompting the then-president to label him a “rat.”

In September 2020, Cohen released a book, “Disloyal: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump,” in which he compared Trump to a “mob boss.” He also called Trump “a cheat, a liar, a fraud, a bully, a racist, a predator, a con man.”
