Rep. Claudia Tenney will be going back to Congress as a representative for the new 24th District. The Republican lawmaker defeated Democrat Steven Holden in the race for the congressional seat that snakes along much of Lake Ontario’s shoreline, the Associated Press projects.

This is the first time Tenney has won a re-election bid as a member of Congress.

“I sincerely thank the voters of New York’s 24th Congressional District who have put their faith and trust in me,” Tenney said in a statement. “I also thank my opponent for running a spirited race. I am so honored that our campaign was a grassroots movement driven by volunteers from across the 24th District. Republicans, Democrats, and independents from the North Country and Central New York to the Finger Lakes and Western New York all came together to change the direction of country and restore principled leadership to Washington. I will not let them down as I continue my fight to support our small businesses, family farms, and seniors. I will always be a tenacious and compassionate advocate for our region in Congress.

"Now that we have delivered on the promise of a Red Wave, it is time to deliver on our commitment to America. This includes an economy that is strong, a nation that is safe, a future that is built on freedom, and a government that is accountable to the people. I am excited to be joined by so many new talented Republican candidates who are on track to be elected tonight in New York and around the country. Alongside this bold group of strong and principled leaders, in January, we are going to fire Nancy Pelosi and immediately start holding Joe Biden accountable and restoring opportunity, prosperity, and safety to our communities.”

The Mohawk Valley native and former state assemblywoman was first elected to the 22nd District in 2016. She was narrowly unseated in 2018 by Democrat Anthony Brindisi and then narrowly won the seat back in 2020. Following the state’s redistricting process, Tenney opted to run in the 24th District, which runs from Niagara County to the Thousand Islands region, snaking south of the greater Rochester area.

Tenney has been a strong ally to former President Donald Trump, who endorsed her candidacy in the new district earlier this year. She defeated Mario Fratto in the Republican primary race in August.

Tenney will be sworn in on Jan. 3 as a member of the 118th Congress.
