An Albanian immigrant, Aleksander Mici is looking to make political history by beating Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in November’s general election, saying it’s his “duty” to stop the spread of socialism in the United States.

Mici, a lawyer based in New York City, argues the United States is “heading towards a catastrophic march towards socialism” and that must be stopped or the country will fall into a dictatorship. Mici said he is concerned about the weakening of the criminal justice system in New York, the distribution of wealth and unsecured borders.

Mici faces an uphill battle to get to the nation’s capital. He will first need to secure the Republican nomination in a potential June primary against Joe Pinion, who spoke with Capital Tonight on Tuesday. The subsequent general election in November would pit him against Schumer, who hasn’t received less than 66% of the vote since he took down then-incumbent Republican Sen. Al D’Amato in 1998. A Senate majority leader hasn’t lost re-election since South Dakota Democrat Tom Daschle in 2004. Mici, undeterred, cites a crossover appeal to Democratic voters in his unsuccessful New York City Council race where he garnered 44% of the vote in a Democratic Bronx district.
