Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie kicked off his annual summer tour of New York with a stop in Huntington on Long Island.
Heastie has toured New York state each summer since he took the top post in the Assembly in 2015. The summer tour has taken him to various corners of New York, from rural areas in Washington County to a replica of the Star Trek set in Ticonderoga.
The tour, often with members of the Democratic conference and local offiicals, can bolster Heastie's ties with his fellow Democrats and allow them to highlight their relationship with one of the state's main powerbrokers in Albany.
The Bronx Democrat on Tuesday toured the Huntington Highway Department with Assemblymember Steve Stern. Both lawmakers pointed to the need to fund infrastructure for local governments.
“The more we invest in the infrastructure of our communities, the better chance we’re giving future generations,” Heastie said, “I’m proud of the work we continue to do to ensure our communities have the resources they need to maintain their infrastructure. I’m excited to join Assemblymember Stern to see this work in action today and the impact it’s having on Long Island.”
