New York state will launch a public service announcement campaign to raise awareness over fair housing laws in the state, Gov. Kathy Hochul's office on Monday announced.

The PSA effort will include ads on radio, social media and billboards in upstate cities to highlight rights to be free of discrimination when it comes to housing.

"This Fair Housing Month, my administration remains committed to ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to a safe, affordable home," Hochul said. "Through this campaign, we'll inform New Yorkers of their right to be protected from housing discrimination - helping create a more equitable, stable, and affordable New York for all."

State officials also plan to hold two in-person fair housing conferences in New York City and Albany to discuss the issue.

"Housing is a human right. The Division is dedicated to rooting out housing discrimination across our state," Division of Human Rights Commissioner Maria Imperial said. "Gov. Hochul has signed several expansions of the state's fair housing laws enabling us to advance human rights for all. Our agency will continue to educate New Yorkers about their rights and build community through events such as our fair housing conferences."

Hochul's announcement, made with the state Division of Human Rights, comes as she is also seeking a statewide housing plan included in the now-delayed state budget. Hochul wants to expand housing statewide by 800,000 units in the next decade.

Part of the plan includes funding for infrastructure like water and sewer systems, but also an acceleration of qualified housing projects by state officials if they are denied by local governments.
