Republican state lawmakers on Wednesday called for a sales tax holiday over the next two years that would cover a range of consumer goods in order to battle inflation woes facing New Yorkers.

If enacted, the measure would provide for about $2.6 billion in yearly tax relief.

“The families we represent are cutting their budgets to make ends meet. As elected leaders, we must also find ways to tighten our belts," Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt said. "For far too long, our bloated, fiscally irresponsible state government has ignored the struggles of middle-class consumers. It is high time for Albany to give it back to the taxpayers by eliminating sales tax on goods and services that the political ruling class takes for granted. We need to do the right thing and provide desperately needed relief to hardworking New Yorkers."

The tax holiday as proposed by the lawmakers would cover purchases of gas, personal care items, housekeeping supplies and prepared food.

Inflation has been a key concern for voters heading into the 2022 election season. In New York, statewide elected officials, as well as all 213 seats in the Legislature, are up for election this November.

“If you want to talk about a state of emergency, it is time to talk about the financial emergency too many New Yorkers are facing right now. Every day I hear from residents who are desperately trying to make ends meet as they are forced to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table," said state Sen. Sue Serino. "With the state still facing a significant budget surplus, we have a duty to provide meaningful relief where we can, and this bill would do just that. I urge my colleagues in the Legislature to do the right thing and do what they can to advance this critical measure."

The high costs New Yorkers are paying has been acknowledged by Democratic lawmakers and officials.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers in April agreed to a suspension of 16 cents in per gallon gas taxes as prices at the pump sharply rose. The provision took effect in June and runs until the end of the year.
