Ana Maria Archila, a progressive activist running for lieutenant governor of New York, picked up her first legislative endorsements on Wednesday in her bid for the Democratic nomination, her campaign announced.
Archila was endorsed by state Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas and Assemblymember Harvey Epstein, Democrats who represent Queens and Manhattan respectively.
"I’m honored to stand with @AnaMariaforNY in her race to win Lieutenant Governor," Epstein wrote on Twitter. "Ana Maria has a vision for our state that will lift up our vulnerable communities and prioritize communities that have been forgotten."
González-Rojas pointed to Archila's support for progressive advocacy issues like immigrant and LGBTQ rights.
"As a national leader, she has fought against gender injustice and for the rights of workers, our immigrant siblings, and LGBTQ communities," she said. "New York has serious issues to confront so we need serious and bold leaders to face them. Ana will be an incredible ally in Albany in the fight for healthcare for all, social housing, and combat our climate crisis. It's time to throw down and bring real change to New York.”
The endorsements from the state lawmakers come a day after Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin resigned the post hours after he was indicted on corruption charges. Benjamin has pleaded not guilty.
Archila is running as the prefferred running mate of New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. Former New York City Council Member Diana Reyna is running as the preferred running mate of U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary.
