A prominent labor union in New York that represents more than 85,000 service workers in the state endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday as she seeks a full term this year.

The endorsement from 32BJ SEIU, a union that represents a range of service workers like cleaners, property maintenance workers, doormen, security officers, window cleaners, building engineers, and school and food service workers, comes after the governor and state lawmakers finalized a $220 billion state budget.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the hardworking members of 32BJ, who serve on the frontline of our workforce and keep our state moving forward," Hochul said. “32BJ members are the backbone of New York, and together, we will continue to fight for safe working conditions, good-paying jobs, and an economy that lifts up all New Yorkers.”

Hochul is being challenged in a Democratic primary this June by New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi.

“If we’re going to bring a worker-led recovery from COVID-19 in New York State, working people need a strong ally in the governor’s office,” said 32BJ President Kyle Bragg. “From fighting for prevailing wages to standing up for workplace protections, Governor Kathy Hochul has been there for working families. Her unwavering commitment to the cause of labor is needed now more than ever. With enthusiasm, we endorse Governor Hochul for a full term.”
