Ana María Archila was designated the Working Families Party's preferred candidate for lieutenant governor on Monday as the progressive ballot line sets its statewide ticket.
An immigant from Colombia, Archila is the co-founder of Make the Road NY and the Center for Popular Democracy, two prominent progressive organizations. She'll be joining a ticket that is topped by New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who is running for governor and challenging Gov. Kathy Hochul in a primary.
“Jumaane Williams and Ana María Archila are accomplished leaders with decades of policy and executive experience,” said Sochie Nnaemeka, the director of the New York Working Families Party. “Ana María is a courageous and fierce advocate for women, immigrants, and working New Yorkers. If we want a future with universal health care, universal child care, affordable housing for all, and a green economy, we need Jumaane Williams and Ana María Archila at the helm. Our party couldn’t be more excited to be supporting this bold and powerful ticket.”
The party previously endorsed Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
“I’m running because right now it’s just too hard for too many people across our state—too hard to make rent, too hard to feed our families, and too hard to get the medical care we need," Archila said. "After four years of Trump and two years of a global pandemic, we still have a governor and lieutenant governor who serve the interests of the billionaires and big corporations. New Yorkers deserve leaders who will put working people first, meet the moment, and fight for real transformation."
