New York state lawmakers are calling for elevating the current Division of Veterans' Services to a full department within the executive branch of government in order to provide expanded help to those who served the country.

The measure would create a Department of Veterans' Services in New York and have the department led by a commissioner. The goal is to have all veterans' programs and services accessible in a centralized office.

“The brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our country are nothing short of heroes,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, who is sponsoring the bill in his chamber. “That’s why I’m working to ensure they have the respect and support they deserve. Upgrading this agency to a state department would help more veterans and their families access important benefits and information. Having served in our nation’s armed forces, you can be sure I’ll always work to make New York State a place service members and veterans are proud to call home.”

The existing Division of Veterans' Services was created more than 75 years ago and has not changed much since that time. The bill backed by lawmakers would restructure programs so they can be more immediately available.

Lawmakers also want there to be expanded outreach efforts to aid veterans in obtaining education, jobs, housing and mental health support.
