New York state is seeking federal aid to support landlords and tenants as a ban on evictions for those suffering pandemic-related financial hardships is set to expire at the end of the week, Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday said.

Talks between the Hochul administration and state lawmakers over the future of the moratorium are being held, but the governor at a news conference indicated the ban may ultimately lapse.

If that happens, New York officials are considering ways of supporting those potentially affected, including the distribution of more aid through web portal.

"What we want to do is let people know that that is concluding very shortly," Hochul said. "I'm having conversations with the Legislature on what to do on this issue, but there's also another option, reopening the (relief) portal."

New York has already distributed millions of dollars meant to provide relief for tenants and their landlords as the eviction moratorium has been extended multiple times, most recently last summer when a federal provision expired.

The current state-level ban on evictions is due to expire on Saturday. New York officials in recent weeks have pointed to additional support for tenants, including legal aid for those who would challenge the evictions in court.
