Local bridge improvement projects in 88 communities in New York are set to receive millions of dollars in state funding, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.

Money for the projects -- which will be awarded to communities from western New York to Montauk on Long Island -- will total a combined $216.2 million, Hochul's office said.

The money will be used for projects to rehabilitate and in some instances replace bridges and culverts. The money is part of a broader program at the state level which is meant to back projects to reduce risk from floods, bolster structures and boost the local economy.

"The 'BRIDGE NY' program provides essential funding to enhance the safety, resiliency and reliability of critical municipally-owned infrastructure," Hochul said. "We must continue to make these strategic investments in our local communities to protect our residents from the increased frequency of extreme weather events, as well as to provide New Yorkers with the modernized and streamlined infrastructure they deserve."

The money is coming after the state previously awarded an even larger chunk of funding, nearly $500 million, to local governments for infrastructure improvement projects.
