Republican Rep. John Katko is calling for increased security along the southern United States border with Mexico, including a resumption of the building of a wall.

Katko, the top GOP lawmaker on the House Homeland Security Committee, called for the security effort as polling has shown voters hold a negative view of President Joe Biden's handling of immigration issues more than 7 months after taking office.

Katko's proposal would also have the Department of Homeland Security upgrade technology to aid Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection enforcement plans. Katko also called for the commissioner of the Customs and Border Protection to expand its workforce by hiring and training new agents to maintain an active duty presence at ports of entry.

And the plan would increase the number of officers for tunnel detection and remediation, as well as agriculture specialists, K-9 units and other support officers.

His call for finishing the construction of the border wall is a signature issue for former President Donald Trump. Katko earlier this year voted to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, drawing the ire of Trump supporters in the process.

Katko pointed to a rise in uanauthorized southern border crossings that have reached more than 1.1 million this year.

"When the southwest border is lawless, it’s the fabric of all our communities that suffers. And that is unacceptable. Like many of my colleagues who’ve supported this legislation, we’ve been down to the southern border several times to see this crisis firsthand and hear directly from those on the frontlines," Katko said. "From finishing the border wall system to modernizing technology and bolstering border staffing, this legislation tackles key shortcomings and weaknesses we’ve seen for ourselves that are fueling the border crisis."
