Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay is urging the Assembly Committee on Judiciary to move quickly on the impeachment investigation reviewing alleged misconduct by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“The Committee on Judiciary’s investigation cannot be used as a mechanism to buy more time,” Barclay wrote. “We have a budget to develop, a public health crisis to deal with, and the state’s economic recovery to advance.

Andrew Cuomo no longer has the trust and credibility to serve as governor of this state. An impeachment investigation is a significant step. But, Assembly Democrats must acknowledge that time is of the essence and that time has run out on Andrew Cuomo.”

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced the launch of this committee to investigate potentially impeaching Governor Cuomo Thursday, shortly after a sixth woman accused the governor of inappropriate behavior.

This newest allegation was released in a Times Union report late Wednesday and has also been referred to the Albany Police Department, by Cuomo’s acting counsel, Beth Garvey.

Cuomo has denied the allegations and called the details “gut-wrenching.”

There is an ongoing investigation being overseen by the Attorney General’s office into these sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo.

And on Thursday, Attorney General Letitia James confirmed that this investigation would continue regardless of what happens in the Legislature.

“Today’s action by the New York state legislature will have no bearing on our independent investigation into these allegations against Governor Cuomo,” James said. “Our investigation will continue.”

This investigation is being led by former Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon Kim and employment discrimination attorney Anne Clark.
