More than a dozen women in the state Assembly on Monday called for Attorney General Letitia James to be given "the appropriate time" to conduct an investigation of allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior leveled against Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The statement comes amid growing calls for Cuomo to step down from the governor's office and as some Democrats begin open talk of impeaching him if he does not resign.

"We believe the attorney general will exercise due process and expediency in her deliberations," the lawmakers wrote in the statement. "We continue to support our attorney general, the first Woman, and the first African American woman to be elected to this position as she launches this investigation."

The statement aligns with Cuomo's own direct calls to New Yorkers in recent days that they await the findings of James's investigation. Cuomo's administration has found it engulfed in multiple crises this year, including scrutiny that his administration under counted the number of nursing home residents who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement also comes as Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on Sunday called for Cuomo to resign. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie stopped short of doing so, but also questioned whether Cuomo can remain in office.

Just as the Democrats released their statement, Assembly Republicans announced plans to introduce an impeachment resolution against Cuomo.

“There’s been one bombshell after another,” Barclay said.
