A pair of Republican state lawmakers on Monday called for a public hearing to assess the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in New York.

Assemblyman Colin Schmitt and Assemblyman Kevin Byrne called for the hearing to be held by their chamber's Local Governments and Health committees.

“We have an obligation to convene Assembly oversight hearings to get to the bottom of what is happening here and help reverse course," Schmitt said.

"We need shots in arms and we need systems in place that accomplishes that. Right now, concern, confusion, and uncertainty has gripped thousands of New Yorkers who are seeking to get shots but simply cannot. This is in large part due to the Governor’s decision to not use the long-standing system of vaccine distribution through the county departments of health.”

The oversight hearing is being called for amid rising frustration from lawmakers in both parties over vaccination distribution, which has steadily increased in recent days as state officials open more sites for shots.

But Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pointed to supply problems at the federal level for limiting what New York can do. Earlier on Monday, Cuomo said he would seek to buy vaccine doses directly from Pfizer.

Still, lawmakers say there should be a deeper dive into what happend over the last month of the rollout.

“The development of multiple life-saving vaccines at such speed is nothing short of miraculous. Still, that alone won’t get the actual shot in the arm. The distribution of the vaccine has been an absolute disaster," Byrne said.

"Politicians can try to finger point their way out of anything and avoid taking responsibility, but it’s part of our job as legislators to get to the bottom of it and ensure better policies are adopted moving forward. The Legislature holds dozens of hearings every year on important subjects that affect our fellow New Yorkers. This should be one of them.”

Cuomo earlier in the day announced one million vaccines had been administered.

"Despite getting thwarted left and right by these craven Republicans' federal counterparts, we've administered over a million doses, dispensed more than 70 percent of our supply and launched an online dashboard that includes numbers, regional data and everything else they asked for," said Cuomo senior advisor Rich Azzopardi.

"Instead of creating needless politically motivated distractions in the midst of this pandemic, maybe they should spend their time pushing their fellow republicans in Washington to spend their final moments in power doing the right thing for once."
